Stainborough in the County of York . .
Wentworth House
This house, formerly called as on the print
Stainborough House,
now known as Wentworth Castle, to distinguish it from its huge
neighbour, Wentworth Woodhouse. The House and the fine Park around
it is due to undergo a substantial conservation programme. The
rather Baroque design is attributed to Jean de Bodt, whom the
owner, Thomas Wentworth (first Lord Raby, then Earl of Strafford)
met in Berlin. This print is exactly contemporary with the build of
the House. The wonderful waterfall with dolphins in front should be
noted, though whether this was built we do not know &endash; it
is not mentioned in Pevsner......" copper-plate engraving published
1713, 15"x 20" Coster (D.),, 1713, uncoloured engraving after
C.Holzendorf, plate dimensions 360 x 470 mm, Unusually this image
is full page/ full ,margins and almost mint condition £285

Moot Hall, Leeds
by Charles Heath.1816Engraving on paper Size 298 mm x 375 mm .Close
printed at the bottom edge ie the dedication is almost on the edge of
the paper. rare easrly town view all now gone £85 inc
.
..Moot Hall built about 1618. Rebuilt in 1710. Demolished in 1826 and a
corn exchange built at the top of Briggate. The white marble statue of
Queen Anne by Andrew Carpenter, gift of Alderman Milner, was placed in
front of Moot Hall 1713, and removed to top of Briggate in 1828 before
going to the City Art Gallery. Moot Hall was the scene of many pageants
notably when Charles 1 made the town into a Royal Borough. The heads of
three executed men in 1664 were also said to have been placed on spikes
at Moothall End . . . .The landscape and figure engraver
Charles
Heath was one of the most active and influential figures in British
book production over the first half of the nineteenth-century. The son
of James Heath, Engraver to the King, he was born on 1 March 1785.
Apprenticed to his father, he made such rapid progress that in 1801,
Benjamin West, President of the Royal Academy, commissioned him to
engrave his large painting Our Lord Healing the Sick. He was soon so
much in demand that he formed an atelier of assistants and pupils. As
work produced by the atelier was invariably signed by Heath, it is
often difficult to distinguish his own contribution from that of his
co-workers. At first Heath and his atelier specialised in topographical
prints but they soon turned to figure work, contributing prolifically
to popular editions of English classics. Heath has been
credited
with producing, for Thomas Campbell's Pleasures of Hope (1820), the
first British published plates to feature engraving on steel rather
than copper. Heath was certainly among the first to grasp the
commercial advantage of steel over copper plates.
