by Christopher Saxton, William & Kip, published London, Georgii Bishop & Ioannis Norton, 1607-37. 1610 Size 26.5 x 32 cm. Christopher Saxton, (c.1543-1610/1611) b. near Dunningley, West Yorkshire. Estate Surveyor and Draughtsmen, apprenticed to the cleric and cartographer John Rudd. Under his tutelage Saxton developed the skills to become the man now known as 'the father of English cartography'. Saxton carried out an extensive topographical survey of England and Wales, 1573-1578 under the patronage of Thomas Seckford. 34 county maps based on the surveys were engraved between 1574 and 1578 by Remy Hogenberg, Lenaert Terwoort, Cornelis de Hooghe, Augustine Ryther, Francis Scatte, and Nicholas Reynolds, forming the first atlas of England and Wales. The work was the basis for many later maps. This has Latin text to verso

This map is from the series of maps included William Camden's Britannia. First published in 1586 with only a general map, the later editions of Camden's Britannia included maps engraved by William Kip and William Hole. These maps were reduced copies of the maps by Saxton and Norden. The sixth edition of Camden's Britiannia, published in 1607 contained these maps. This atlas s contained the first separate representations of many counties. original book central folds £145**

View of the River Dee 3 miles Short of Bala, with Cader Idris Mountain near Dolgelli 30 miles distant ...
from Views in Wales, by Paul Sandby, 1777. . . .by P. Sandby St Georges Row Sepr ist 1775 ; in the 1770's he began to make his first prints in the revolutionary medium of aquatint. Whilst it cannot really be claimed that Sandby invented the medium of brush-drawn aquatint, as Le Prince in France had begun to experiment with a form of aquatint in the 1750's, Sandby was certainly the first artist to truly realise its visual possibilities. Aquatint uses a resin which when applied to a copperplate and then heated turns into a minute pattern of granules around which the etching acid bites creating an area of tone rather than line. Sandby discovered a way of converting Le Prince's dry aquatint powder into a liquid wash and then brushing it onto the plate in a tonal version of a watercolour wash. Sandby's earliest aquatints are views in Wales, drawn during visits to his friend Sir Watkin Williams-Wynne. Condition . . small edge tear easily repaired some faint age toning ; some faint foxing to the border area. Mounted full page . MEGA RARE £75
