of English Abbeys & Cathedrals.
London, 1829.John Coney: John Coney was

1815 he employed Coney to work upon a
large series of etchings depicting
exterior and interior views of the

This massive project occupied Coney for
the following fourteen years and the
completed etchings and engravings were

MAP OF Herefordshire FROM THE BEST
AUTHORITIES.1805
A detailed map of the county with
publisher's imprint dated 1805. 15 3/4 x
20 1/2 inches. Good condition with wide
blank margins. Originally bound on edge so
there is no centre fold. From New British
Atlas published by John Stockdale,
Piccadilly. STOCKDALE, John (publisher)
Cary's maps were popular for their
accuracy and clear style. The numbers
marked on the roads give the distances
between towns. Copper engraved map
Hand-coloured engraved map
(approximately 106 x 120 inches overall)
on double-page folio sheets (each sheet
measuring 24 x 26 1Î2 inches).The

of detail to be shown, with careful
identification of parishes, gentlemen's
seats, heaths and commons, marshes,
navigable canals, dikes, turnpikes,
by-roads, tramways, and even Roman walls.
All shown on a map drawn to a scale of 1
3/8 inches to 5 miles.In 1805 Stockdale

Ogilby, born 1600 near Edinburgh, died
1676, had an extremely versatile
career, being a bookseller, translator,
printer, dancing master, theatre owner,
master of the King's Revels, and
finally a geographer. His claim to fame
rests most securely on his last
accomplishment. He made the first
survey of the roads of England and
Wales, the results being published in a
folio volume entitled Britannia, Vol.
1.....a Geographical and Historical
Description of the Principal Roads
thereof, 1675. This had 100
copper-plates showing the roads in
continuous strip form, six or seven to
a plate, with a decorative heading
enclosing the title. Ogilby was the
first to adopt the statute mile of
1,760 yards. Before Ogilby different
scales were used in different parts of
the country......he revolutionised the
printed map: from his time, roads began
to be inserted on the county maps, and
this soon became an established
