brothers, Samuel & Nathaniel Buck
began their task of creating a visual
record of ancient monuments in England and
Wales. "Buck's Views" as they were called
are 428 views of the ruins of all noted
abbeys, castles, together with four views
of seats and eighty-three large general
views of the chief cities and towns of
England and Wales. Printed and sold
individually and collected into volumes
for book purchasers. Samuel Buck was born
in Richmond, Yorkshire, in 1696, Nathaniel
being a younger brother. ~Published
between 1724-38 on Hand-Made Laid

cartographer John Rudd. Under his
tutelage Saxton developed the skills to
become the man now known as 'the father
of English cartography'. Saxton carried
out an extensive topographical survey
of England and Wales, 1573-1578 under
the patronage of Thomas Seckford. 34
county maps based on the surveys were
engraved between 1574 and 1578 by Remy
Hogenberg, Lenaert Terwoort, Cornelis
de Hooghe, Augustine Ryther, Francis
Scatte, and Nicholas Reynolds, forming
the first atlas of England and Wales.
The work was the basis for many later
maps.This has Latin text to
verso

William Camden's Britannia. First
published in 1586 with only a general
map, the later editions of Camden's
Britannia included maps engraved by
William Kip and William Hole. These
maps were reduced copies of the maps by
