Cowdray House in Sussex the the Seat of Ld, Viscount Montague N.E.View /After Samuel Hieronymus Grimm by Basire 1796

Special Rare historic set of engravings

Cowdray House drawn by Samuel Hieronymous Grimm (c. 1733 – 1794) in 1785 and subsequently engraved by Basire, published in 1796
Drawn from the Original, by S.H. Grimm (Samuel Hieronymus Grimm,)in 1786 before being destroyed by fire on 25th September 1793 and not rebuilt.. Engraved by James Basire, Sumptibus Societatis Antiquariorum Londini. Publish'd according to Act of Parliament, 23rd April, 1796

Included due to the destruction of Cowdray House by fire , extracted from Vetusta Monumenta, vol. 3. The Society of Antiquities had been issuing individual prints to Fellows since its formal establishment in 1717, and in the series known as Vetusta Monumenta since 1743. The Field of the Cloth of Gold was to be the first in a new series of large historical prints, but the shape and size of the original painting was such that it was impossible to reduce it to an engraving of any ordinary format. After discovering that no paper was made of a suitable size in Europe, the Society ordered some paper 31 x 53in to be made by paper manufacturer, James Whatman. This was the largest sheet of paper made for more than a century, and is still called Antiquarian. Number 6 Meanwhile, James Basire, the Society's engraver to whom William, Blake was apprenticed at the time, was engraving the copperplate from Edwards' watercolour. He was paid £200 for the work, which took two years to complete and measured 4ft 1in by 2ft 3in.

Four hundred copies were printed, of which about 230 were distributed together with a copy of Ayloffe's description to Fellows in February 1775. The rest were made available to the public for two guineas each. The watercolour by Edwards and two copies of the print were presented to George Ill: a coloured print was kept by the Society [no longer known] and other coloured versions were presented to Lord Hardwicke who had financially supported the publication and Sir Joseph Ayloffe. with engravings by Basire from drawings by S. H. Grimm of 'South View of Cowdray from the Cottage', 'North View of Cowdray House', 'Cowdray-house in Sussex, the Seat of Ld Viscount Montague, N: E: View', 'W: View of Cowdray-house, the Seat of Viscount Montague', 'Inner front of Cowdray-house, taken from the Gateway', and 'Cowdray-court from the Lodging house, copied from a drawing by Mr Russel & corrected by F: Grose Esqr' These are this set of the house itself .Engravings were issued in the series Vetusta Monumenta (Ancient Monuments), which ran intermittently from 1718 to 1906. The distinguished engraver George Vertue was an early member and was responsible for most engravings up to his death in 1756.
