Gainsborough (Thomas, R.A.) a rustic landscape,
from an Original Picture in the Possession of Mr Panton Betew',ETCHING
AND ENGRAVING by François Vivares,
1709-80 280 x
375mm., trimmed to 1 cm the platemark, engraved by
Vivares,
1765; published by Vivares March 1765 .François Vivares was
a
French-born engraver and print publisher active in England, where he
was one of the founders of the English school of landscape
engraving. His family came to London in 1711. There
he
learned engraving with Joseph Wagner and was producing prints by
1739. His ornament books helped to introduce the Rococo style
to
England from circa 1740 to 1760. He also engraved landscape
prints after Old Master painters such as Claude Lorrain and by English
and foreign contemporaries such as Gainsborough, Thomas Smith of Derby
and Claude-Joseph Vernet. Gainsborough's earliest prints, drawn in the
1750's, were executed in pure etching, as is seen in Wooded Landscape
with Gipsies but by the 1770's he had turned to using the textures and
tones of softground linked to washes in aquatint (as in Wooded
Landscape with a Country Cart and Figures). Despite his pleasure and
inspiration in the print media he had little success in selling his
pnnts, even when sold by the professional publisher Boydell they found
little public recognition. As a result the editions were very
restricted and examples have become extremely rare today. A very very
rare beastie included here as most scenes are Suffolk the two engraving
he did in his lifetime are stupid money this is almost as rare but
affordable. Condition water mark on left edge small edge tear
