Many of the counties have changed over time Berwick on Tweed
even changing countries. In 1974 the counties of
Scotland were re-arranged to regions from the
original
thirty-three counties. 'Shire' is the Anglo-Saxon word
designating a county or district, which was integrated into
Scotland by the English. A shire was policed by a 'shire reeve' or
sheriff. The exception is Fife, which has never actually been
a county , but anciently was a kingdom.. . . . if in doubt try
