William Henry.Pyne
The Costume of Great Britain.
London. William Miller. 1804 & 1808 Folio [11.5 x 15.5 ins
mounted and matted price includes delivery etc]. from a set of 60
ORIGINAL HAND COLOURED ENGRAVED PLATES, (AQUATINT),. The first
edition was published in 1804 with uncoloured back ground. The
second edition 1808 had a partial coloured background and the third
edition was in full colour . . being old fashioned I prefer the
simple and muted to the technicolour but that is personal taste
. Pyne's plates portray a diversity
of trades, occupations and
services. All classes are represented from the most elevated ranks
to the lowest labourer. Considerable attention is paid to each
trade, giving a valuable record of British society on the eve of
the Industrial revolution. William Henry Pyne is generally known as
an etcher, landscape painter and author of literature. Pyne
combines all three of his talents to produce a charming account
which invites the reader to experience the many aspects of early
nineteenth century Britain. Pyne exhibits costumes ranging from
clergy and military dress to those of milk maids and coal
shovellers. Pictured against the beautifully drawn and colored
backgrounds, the figures come to life in their contemporary
settings. Contemporary of such great character artists as Thomas
Rowlandson and George Cruikshank, W.H. Pyne, in the wardrobes and
dress represented here, allows us to see the manners, habits and
lifestyle during the early 1800's.
