1870 most posters were still
woodblocks or metal engravings with little colour or
design relying on simple motifs and the typography to
gain attention as in the stunning pic above of an 1880's
street.
After 1870 this changed with the "three stone lithographic process," which allowed artists to achieve every colour in the rainbow with as little as three stones - usually red, yellow and blue - printed with overlay to produce further colouring but technically difficult and expensive hence these being more expensive now . By the outbreak of the first world war most posters were printed using the mass production technique of photo offset, which resulted in the familiar dot pattern seen in newspapers and magazines. These were cheaper to produce but often also on cheap fragile paper which needs to be perfect or quickly shreds from the edges as in the early 20's posters we have.

Prince of Wales Investiture Poster / July 1, 1969
Privately published and sold by the Fulham Gallery by Tom Adams , which not only gave first exhibitions of some now famous artists, but was for several years the center of the late '60's phenomenon - the poetry print. This was produced by and signed by Cecil Day-Lewis (the Poet Laureate) and artist Joseph Herman (1911-2000) and John Piper (1903-1992) . The Colour off-set lithograph, on hand made wove paper , signed by the poet, Cecil Day Lewis and both artists in black pen and numbered from a total production of 150 . Size 48.3 x 73.7cm plus borders. Hermann specialised in Welsh Miners and was a logical choice but as the 'Investiture' was foisted onto the Welsh it did not sell in Wales . . .. people of the valleys were not really in the market for (when new) overpriced London posters.. .This is from a part of the original 150 all mint condition from long term storage with a very minimal curve from being stored upright that will remove when framed . £175 inc delivery worldwide

Rare mint poster produced by the 86 Vancouver fair showing all the 'passport stamps' you could collect in a special booklet for visiting each attraction. £65 inc delivery from a large poster archive been in a trunk for over 20 years
Bill Graham postcards were printed with several different backs:- Place Stamp Here (PSH), Advertising backs, Blank backs and Bulk Rate Permit backs (as well as combinations of these types in the case of double sized cards). These come from a single collection and sales above £35 are post inclusive worldwide
Many cards were produced in more than one back style. The Ad backs and Bulk Rate backs were used to advertise the shows. They are generally harder to find and more valuable than the PSH backs which which were produced for retail marketing. However, please note that Ad back cards were not produced prior to #119. The numbered poster began in 1966 with BG-1, which advertised Jefferson Airplane at The Fillmore . The BG Series ends in June 1972 with BG-289—the Rolling Stones “Tumbling Dice” poster.
The Bill Graham numbered series includes handbills and postcards. Poster artists Wes Wilson (BG-18), Bonnie MacLean , Stanley Mouse , Alton Kelley, Greg Irons , Lee Conklin , Rick Griffin (BG-105), Bob Fried, Victor Moscoso , Randy Tuten , and David Singer all created posters for the BG Series. BG Series poster collections have been on display nationally and internationally in museums, art galleries, and at poster art showcase events. The early BG posters were printed on vellum paper and are very difficult to find in top condition today, later ones often on card. BG numbers 0 to 45 are in three sizes of printings—posters, handbills, and postcards. After number 45, handbills were no longer printed; only posters and postcards were produced. However, sometimes the postcards with a calendar or “show back” are referred to as handbills on ebay etc just to upset me. Most measure approximately 5″ x 7
**These are a complete collection mailed to the UK most have the rare bulk mailer stamp some additionally have extra postage stamps as under paid. In the period between 1965
and 1971 in San Francisco There was an outburst
of graphic creativity that is unparalleled in
American art. Drawn by a handful of now
well-known artists as well as a legion of lesser
known ones, this work is known as Psychedelic
Rock ConcerT Poster Art. At the heart of the
early part of this era, 1966-1967 , was the
print shop known as The Bindweed Press. The
Bindweed Press was the DBA of a printer named
Frank Westlake. Westlake personally printed
several dozen of the best-known early San
Francisco psychedelic posters including many
original printings of the most famous early
Family Dog images for concerts at the Avalon
Ballroom as well as many posters and handbills
for other local San Francisco venues such as
Winterland. Among these are the world famous,
iconic Skeleton and roses image for the Grateful
Dead ,at the Avalon, Family Dog No.26,
Frankenstein, also for the Dead at the Avalon,
Family Dog No. 22 and the Zig-Zag man for Big
Brother and the Holding company at the Avalon,
Family Dog No. 14. All of these bear the bottom
margin notation “The Bindweed Press “
Back in the early 70s, a set of non USA 'pirate' printings were made of some of the most recognizeable posters from the Fillmore and Avalon series, as well as various 60s happenings and concerts. The Bindweed Press in San Francisco was responsible for printing many of the early west coast psychedelic dance posters, including those for The Family Dog.The owner of Bindweed (Chet Helms) authorised re-prints of posters like this to be sold commercially after the actual gig & obtaining 1st prints as opposed to later prints is difficult. The Bindweed Press was the trading name of Frank Westlake, and he included the Bindweed Press credit on posters that he printed. Westlake fell out with Helms & de-camped to London (taking many original printing plates) where he established the San Francisco Poster Company . These Posters were printed in London from the original plates c' late 1960's-early 70's. Numerous re-prints of these posters circulate in the States but as the "San Francisco Poster Company" posters used the original plates (legally owned by Westlake), these posters have now become collectable in their own right . These plates were his legal property. By the mid-1970’s he
had reprinted a number of posters in the UK
using the original plates, but deleted The
Bindweed Press credit and instead inserted the
San Francisco Poster Co. credit. In some
instances he used totally different colours for
posters, compared with original printings, in
other cases he stuck closely to the colours of
the original. These posters were all labelled
"San Francisco Poster Company" even though they
were actually printed in England. You can find
listings for these posters in most catalogues of
60s posters, and they are collected along with
other legitimate 60s reprints and are way nearer
the original to modern gicle reprints

So long as you
are properly aware of the intricate and
controversial history of this material, It has
long been accepted to buy and/or sell it. These
posters are over 40 years old and by virtue of
their age and increasing rarity they have
attained their own unique collectible
attributes..The original printing plates were
used to produce the reprint, but the colour
schemes are often radically different to the
original and oddly on better paper as some of my
originals are on almost old cereal packets

Michael McClure’s The Beard, Stanford University, 1967
Michael McClure wrote the play, The Beard, in 1965. Poster is for two performances at Stanford University in Palo Alto. The first was on 19 April 1967 at the Dinkelspiel Auditorium, and the second on 4 May 1967 at the Freeborn Hall. It became the subject of an obscenity prosecution and was a cause celebre with civil liberties groups. Eventually it was ruled that it was not appropriate to prosecute such work, and all charges, including a subsequent appeal, were dropped. However, in the 1960’s the play still caused controversy when it was staged. This poster is for two performances at Stanford University in Palo Alto. The first was on 19 April 1967 at the Dinkelspiel Auditorium, and the second on 4 May 1967 at the Freeborn Hall. The poster was designed by Bob Fried. Stamps started at the Expo '85, officially called The International Exposition, Tsukuba, Japan, 1985 (国際科学技術博覧会, Kokusai Kagaku Gijutsu Hakurankai?, "The International Science Technology Exposition"), was a world's fair held in Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan (Tsukuba Science City, a planned city focused on technology north of Tokyo) between Sunday, March 17 and Monday, September 16, 1985. .
A few have tape on them but modern easily removed with solvent spray not old yellow sellotape which stains. Some have glue and other defects all labelled and sorting these was a real pain but needed doing properly. Over £35 post inclusive anywhere**

Glen Baxter poster
An original vintage poster for the exhibition at the Seita Museum in Paris in 1990.The son of a welder, Glen Baxter was born in Leeds on 4 March 1944. He studied painting and lithography at Leeds School of Art (1960-5), and then taught in schools in London and Norwich (1967-74), and part-time at Goldsmiths’ College (1974-86). His poems and short stories were first published in 1970 in the New York magazine Adventures in Poetry, while his illustrative work first appeared later in the nineteen-seventies. His work is based on the style of much English children’s illustration of the thirties and forties, especially of stories of school and adventure, adapted to create a quietly surreal mismatch of image and caption. He has published several books in England and the United States, and has contributed to London, New Yorker, the Observer magazine, Het Parool and Globe Hebdo. .There are some minor creases. All my posters are in used condition and may feature slight creasing, any major faults will be mentioned. £55
'Treasures and Curiosities'. 1968

Designed by Christopher Firmstone, 1968. Height: 76.2cm Width: 50.8cm Silly rare as such fragile paper. . . it is simply gold wrapping paper for presents bought in then overprinted £145 in delivery
