Mezzotint from 'The Lives of the Principal Reformers, both Englishmen and Foreigners, Comprehending the General History of the Reformation; From its Beginning, in 1360, by Dr. John Wickliffe; To its Establishment, in 1600, under Queen Elizabeth, with an Introduction; wherein The Reformation is amply vindicated, and its Necessity fully shewn, from the Degeneracy of the Clergy, and the Tyranny of the Popes. by Mr. [Richard] Rolt the Whole embellished with the Heads of the Reformers, Elegantly done in Metzotinto [sic], by Mr. [Richard] Houston  London: Printed for E. Bakewell and H. Parker, opposite Birchin-Lane, Cornhill; J. Robinson, in Ludgate-Street; and T. Pote, in Fleet-Street,  M DCC LIX [1759]  Image **size 260 x 200mm  Full page good Borders Info :- Zealous Reformer of the Church, was born at Wildishausen, in the Country of Tecklenburg, in 1487. Killed October 11th ,1531, in a civil war which broke out in Switzerland between the five Catholic Cantons and those of Zurich an Berne. His Works consist of Commentaries on various Books of the Old and New Testament, and of Controversial Tracts. The greater part of these were written in German, but they were afterwards translated into Latin, and printed at Basil in 1544, at Zurich in 1581, and at Basil again in1592.  £70 inc delivery This is photographed through cellophane pic if fine

 Proof Portrait of Richard Tattersall, Print made by William Giller  After Charles Hancock  .Published 4th October  1841 by Ackermann at the Sporting Gallery  191 Regent Street London   Mixed method engraving with mezzotint. . . .Tattersalls (formerly spelled with an apostrophe) is the main auctioneer of race horses in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. It was founded in 1766 by Richard Tattersall (1724–1795), who had been stud groom to the second Duke of Kingston. The first premises occupied were near Hyde Park Corner, in what was then the outskirts of London. Two "Subscription rooms" were reserved for members of the Jockey Club, and they became the rendezvous for sporting and betting men. £125 full page good borders x 2

Marginal foxing.King James I of England and VI of Scotland (1566-1625); reigned, Scotland from 1567, England 1603-25.He is mounted on a prancing horse, in front of a prospect of London.James succeeded to the English throne in 1603, on the death of Elizabeth I and moved his court from Edinburgh to London. Intelligent and scholarly, the influence exercised over him by a succession of male favourites, and his deep belief in the ‘Divine Right of Kings’ made him unpopular with his subjects and contributed to the difficult political legacy he left his son, Charles I. A copy after the engraving by Francis Delaram (1615 - 1624; active), by Charles Turner (1773 - 1857). Inscribed 'Proof' lower right. Reverend Andrew Manship (1823-1892) was a clergyman born in Maryland. In 1843 he was admitted to the Philadelphia conference of the Methodist Episcopal church and two years later was made a deacon and later an elder.  £55 inc delivery light age toning

Reverend Albert Barnes (1798-1870) was born in New York and attended Hamilton College and graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1823. Two years later he was ordained paster of the Presbyterian church in Morristown, New Jersey. However from 1830 until 1867 he was pastor of the first Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia where he later resigned and was made pastor emeritus. He advocated the abolition of slavery and worked actively to promote Sunday-school. He later faced trial and was acquitted, but his acusers had him suspended from the ministry, but he was again acquitted in 1836. He was accused of preaching that man had free will to accept or deny the Gospel, and thus broke from strict Calvinism.

Labelled to the back in pencil as  J K Knap  given from Mrs Phelps  1866 Francis Jeffrey, Lord Jeffrey (1773-1850), Scottish judge and critic; editor of the 'Edinburgh Review' The Scottish judge Francis Jeffrey founded the Whig periodical the Edinburgh Review in 1802. As its editor and leading contributor between 1803 and 1829, Jeffrey was one of the most influential commentators on matters of art, politics and science. Known as a ruthless critic, he was hostile to Wordsworth and his circle whom he named, sarcastically, the 'Lake School'. He was slow to appreciate the work of Scott, Keats and Byron and one of his early attacks provoked Byron's satiric poem English Bards and Scotch Reviewers(1809). £55 scarce sent cleaned
