The South View of Holdenby Palace , in the County of Northampton

In 1726, brothers, Samuel & Nathaniel Buck began their task of creating a visual record of ancient monuments in England and Wales. "Buck's Views" as they were called are 428 views of the ruins of all noted abbeys, castles, together with four views of seats and eighty-three large general views of the chief cities and towns of England and Wales. Printed and sold individually and collected into volumes for book purchasers. Samuel Buck was born in Richmond, Yorkshire, in 1696, Nathaniel being a younger brother. ~Published between 1724-38 on Hand-Made Laid Watermarked Paper, 11 1/4" x 18 1/2" £40

from John Coney, Views of English Abbeys & Cathedrals. London, 1829.John Coney: John Coney was first apprenticed to an architect but chose to follow a career in the arts. In 1815 he published his first work, a series of eight views of Warwick Castle, drawn and etched by himself. Brought to the attention of the artist and illustrator, James Duffield Harding (1797-1863), in 1815 he employed Coney to work upon a large series of etchings depicting exterior and interior views of the cathedrals and abbey churches of England. This massive project occupied Coney for the following fourteen years and the completed etchings and engravings were published in 1829 under the title of Views of English Abbeys and Cathedrals. Moule. . published by G.Virtue around 1845 showing the railway line. Fine line engraving with decorative border, heraldic shields and vignettes of Belvoir Castle, Ulverscroft Abbey, Donington Castle and fox hunting scenes. Steel engraved map with recent hand colour. Size 19.5x28.5cms/7.5"x10.5". £40Thomas Moule (1784-1851) was a scholar and writer on heraldry and antiquities who worked in London as a bookseller and later on worked in the Lord Chamberlain's department.The County Maps for which he is best known were first published in the 1830's in the reign of William IV and re-issued in 1841 in the reign of Victoria. The original steel plates were used for all issues, but they were amended in the later edition to show the railways.
