come from different series of
bible illustrations by Jan
Goeree, F. van Bleyswyck and
others, and were probably chosen
at the request of the Bible's
first owner

technique of biblical criticism.

The book is the1732 folio edition
of Dom Augustin Calmet's
Dictionnnaire Historique, ... de
la Bible. Calmet (1672-1757) was
a Benedictine monk, scholar, and
teacher of philosophy and
theology who had access to many
manuscripts and books in many
libraries and was able to compile
the first dictionary of its kind.
His work was seminal but dated.
He was a pioneer in biblical
study. The dictionary was written
while he was Abbey of
Moyenmoutier. The English title
was "An Historical, Critical,
Geographical, Chronological, and
Etymological Dictionary of the
Holy Bible ..." The book was
published originally in 1725, and
there were many later editions in
various languages as well as
books influenced by Calmet.
