. Paris. 1784. B/W. 8½X6½. This engraving of a decorative carved box made by the natives of New Zealand, was probably drawn by John Webber, who accompanied Capt.  James Cook on his 3rd voyage to the Pacific in 1776-1780. It was engraved by Robert Benard, for the French edition of Cook's Voyages and published in Paris in 1784.  £30 full page no defects

  by T. Prattent after Richard Cleveley(1747–1809).In 1787, British naval commander Arthur Phillip (1738-1814) led the 'First Fleet' carrying convicts to Australia. The day of his landing at Botany Bay, 26 January 1788, was later celebrated as Australia Day. Phillip founded a penal colony at Sydney Cove, Port Jackson, and was made Governor (colonial administrator) of New South Wales. The native aboriginal people were marginalised and persecuted for the next two hundred years.
