Count Platoff, general
in chief, Hetman of
the Don Cossacks
paintd by
P.F.Stroehling ... & engraved by
I.Vendramini. [London], 1815. Stipple engraving. Count Platoff,
Hetman of the Cossacks (1751-1818): Matvei Platov was the leader
(or 'Hetman') of the Don Cossacks and a feared commander of
cavalry. Platov's tactics became famous in the 1812 French invasion
of Russia, when his men lived off the land and constantly harried
the much stronger French forces. Using the harsh Russian winter to
its best advantage, Platov continually punished the beleaguered
French infantry on its retreat from Moscow. £15
