polished paper .some are obviusly of the Franco Prussian war;

The Gillot Process Firmin Gillot, father of Charles Gillot
(1820-1872), invented in 1852 the paniconography for which he took
a patent (photoengraving in relief according to the letterpress on
several early plate). Later, he invented a new process, again in
relief, but nonphotographic.Around 1870, his son Charles Gillot
developed the Gillotage process(photomechanical). This process
would quickly predominate the illustrated newspapers and books of
the period, such as for example: Le Charivari,Le Rire, L'assiette
au beurre, Gil Blas Illustre, and many
others.
Artists :-Jean Baptiste
Édouard Detaille (October 5,
1848 - December 23, 1912), a French Academic painter and
military artist noted for his precision and realistic detail.
He served in the French Army in the Franco-Prussian War of
1870-1871 and became the official painter of the battles. He is
famous for his portraits of soldiers and depictions of military
manoeuvres, military uniforms and general military life.
. . . .Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe de Neuville (May 31,
1835–May
18, 1885) was a French Academic painter who studied under
Eugène
Delacroix. His dramatic and intensely patriotic subjects
illustrated episodes from the Franco-Prussian War, the Crimean War,
the Zulu War and portraits of soldiers.

Russia -
28/2/1909, France) Emmanuel Poiré, the
grandson of a
Napoleontine officer stationed in Russia, was born in Moscow. In
1877, he moved to France and became a military officer. He
published his first drawings in Le Chronique Parisienne in 1880,
specializing in military caricatures. He used the pseudonym Caran
d'Ache, which comes from karandash, the Russian word for
pencil.
