William Douglas MACLEOD,
(1892-1963)
Born in Clarkston, Renfrewshire, Scotland, he
started work as a bank clerk 1906-15, before serving with
the Royal Artillery in W.W.1 Subsequently he studied at
the Glasgow School of Art 1919-23. He was also a
cartoonist for the Glasgow Evening News 1920-30, and
etched from his home in Lenzie, Renfrewshire c1913-49.
Influenced by James McBey, he gained a reputation as an
etcher during the 1920's and 30's. The prestigeous Fine
Art Society in London published his etchings in the
1920's.He visited the Continent and North Africa on many
occasions etching views in Algeria, Spain, Italy, Belgium
and elsewhere. Exhibited R.S.A., G.I. and L. and Paris
Salon, Glasgow Art Gallery holds his work.
