Stow's A Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster

These, engraved topograhical views are from John Stow's work A Survey of the Cities of London and Westminter and the Borough of Sothwark. The work was originally published in 1598 and 1603. Many editions followed which included revisions, additions, and enlargements, both by the original author and others including John Strype.pub: London, A.Churchill [et al.], 1720. 1st ed some here from Sixth edition printed in 1754-1755 included :-30 engraved plates (7 double- page), 40 maps (2 folding, 26 double-page),

The first well-illustrated edition, in which John Kip, among others, had a large hand.Illustrators range from Kip . Blome, Cole etcplate 21 features Wrens Custom House which burnt down in 1718 !

Benjamin Cole (fl.1723-1767) copied the images and cut plates originally produced for the part-work edition of William Maitland's "History of London" (London : 1753-1756)..Later these were used for Thornton's ' New & Complete History & Survey of London & Westminster ' published 1775-80 on smoother paper

Bridewell , area in London, England, between Fleet St. and the Thames River. The Bridewell house of correction, demolished in 1863, was on the site of a palace built under Henry VIII and given by Edward VI to the City of London in 1553 for use as a training school for homeless apprentices. The building later became a prison. Bridewell thus came to be used as a general term for a prison or house of correction. Edition by Kip  1720  or earlier £45
