Historical and Descriptive Account of the Caricatures of James Gillray Comprising a Political and Humorous History of the Latter Part of the Reign of George the Third by Thomas Wright and R. H. Evans London: Henry G. Bohn, 1851 Between 1845 and 1851, Henry Bohn published editions of Gillray's works from Gillray's original plates. Over 600 numbered plates were printed back-to-back in two giant atlas folio volumes. . .a good tint ie they date from 1845/51. The third volume was the 'suppressed or gentleman's prints not go ladies viewing etc and as such much scarcer .. . all where possible with a historical description/translation
After failing as a portrait painter, Gillray worked as a freelenace engraver and etcher. After 1782 he started producing political satires, mainly inspired by the conflict between the Whigs and the Tories, the French Revolution and war against Napoleon. Originally his caricatures would have been issued separately, mainly from the print shop of his mistress, Hannah Humphrey, in St. James's Street, London. His eyesight started failing him, causing him to stop work in 1809. Depressed he turned to drink, and in July 1811 Gillray attempted to kill himself by throwing himself out of attic window above Humphrey's shop. He failed, and survived four years of insanity before dying in 1815.

THE LOVER'S DREAM. January 8th, 1795.

Mrs. Fitzherbert, and other favourites, Sheridan. Fox.GEORGE III. THE QUEEN. PRINCE OF WALES. PRINCESS CAROLINE.On the negotiations for the marriage of the Prince of Wales with the Princess Caroline of Brunswick, which was solemnized on the 8th of April, 1795. It was popularly expected that this marriage would wean the Prince from his old vices, and here we see his hunters, his mistresses, his gambling companions, and his bacchanalian propensities, all disappearing before the dazzling prospect; which, however, as it was soon discovered, was but a dream.** Hand Coloured. The Injured Count,, S___"
First published, ? 1786, or May 1788. A horrific depiction of Lady Strathmore dominates this image, probably published during the trial between the Countess and her second husband, Andrew Robinson Stoney Bowes. The print is filled with references to her well-known love of cats, her hatred for her eldest son, and an alleged affair with her footman.  Lady Strathmore sits drinking with her servants, gin glass in hand, with her breasts bare. She is suckling two cats. ** Hand Coloured. Le Cochon et ses Deux Petits, or Rich Pickings for a Noble Appetite,

by James Gillray, First published, by Hannah Humphrey in 1792 Later colour. This is from the later Bohn Edition of 1849 shows the DUKE Of NORFOLK.Another subject of contemporary scandal, the hero of which, in this instance, is the celebrated Duke of Norfolk, who was nicknamed the ROYAL DUKE, because he was always drunk, or, to use the vulgar phrase, "royal." Gill- ray has frequently represented him as an inebriated votary of Bacchus ; he has here represented him sacrificing to Venus. After dining at the Piazza Coffee House, he would sally forth, and in a state of intoxication might be seen in the saloons of the theatres, or other places of public resort, seated on a sofa between a couple of fair Cyprians, quaffing his wine and conversing with them. He used to wear a grey coat, turned up with a black velvet collar, black small clothes, and black silk stockings, and would ask them, " If they could take up with a country curate."** Hand Coloured. What a Cur 'tis!

Hand-colored etching by J ames Gillray , originally published by Hannah Humphrey, June 9, 1795 This is from the later Bohn Edition of 1849 Admiral Lord Howe (a.k.a. Black Dick), admiral of the English Channel Fleet, enjoys a long, cool draught from his pipe, a time-honored sailor's activity. On the table lies a map of Torbay inlet on the coast of Devonshire, where weather sometimes legitimately forced him to take refuge, but which some writers interpreted as dodging. At his feet, his flag-captain, Admiral Sir Roger Curtis ("Black Dick's Dog"), grovels, a reference to criticism levelled at him for his fawning behavior toward Howe.** Hand Coloured. POLITICAL CANDOUR; i.e. COALITION RESOLUTIONS OF JUNE 8TH, 1805.&emdash;(Pro bono Publico.) June 21st

1805. PITT. LORD H. PETTY. TIERNEY. ERSKINE. FOX. SHERIDAN. WILBERFORCE. WINDHAM. GREY. In this print Gillray represents Fox addressing the House, and acquitting Pitt of the charge of personal con- ruption. Pitt is delighted with the generous testimony of his rival in his favour, and calls out " Here, here, here," pointing to the Treasury Bench. Fox, charmed with the grateful acknowledgments of his exertions, says, " Oh, how I shall enjoy to sit down with him on the bench of honesty." " An immaculate statesman, &emdash; just like my own papa." Fox holds in his left hand behind him " Arrangements for a new Coalition." Windham is holding in his hand "Votes and Speeches for the Political Register ;" but finding the turn the Debate has taken, exclaims, " He deserves a statue of gold more than Porcupine (id cst Cobbett) himself." Wilberforce ejaculates, " Oh, he's an angel of light, a cherubim of glory." A porter pot lies upset on the ground, and the beer is running out on the floor, intimating that Whitbrcad's charge against Pitt h as been over, turned, &c. & ** Hand Coloured. BLINDMAN'S BUFF; OR, TOO MANY FOR JOHN BULL. June 12th, 1795.

Hand Coloured. Trimmed from a larger sheet, narrow top margin..***All shown with the margin against a darker carpet to show borders***This is from the later Bohn Edition of 1849 to 1851 **

PITT. RUSSIA. AUSTRIA. JOHN BULL. HOLLAND AND FRANCE.On the subsidies and aids granted so lavishly by the English Government to the Continental Powers in arms against France. Prussia and Austria are picking John's pockets, while France and Holland are treating him with derision. Poor John, blindfold in the midst of his enemies, knows not whither to turn to avoid them, while his ruler betrays him into their hands. The loan granted by the British Government to the Emperor of Austria had excited very animated discussions in the House of Commons t the end of May and beginning of June of this year. In 1795 the British Government loaned money to Austria to help pay for the French Revolutionary War. Here John Bull is shown being abused by both friend and foe. The Austrian emperor picks his pocket; a Prussian Death's Head Hussar waves another bag of cash; a Dutchman blows pipe-smoke in Bull's face while a sans-coulotte kicks his backside. The final indignity is the British Prime Minister, Pitt the Younger, shouting encouragement to the tormentors while rifling the pockets of Bull's jacket. £65 post inclusive

HOMER SINGING HIS VERSES TO THE GREEKS.

June 16th, 1797.

CAPTAIN MORRIS. SHERIDAN. FOX. This is understood to be an excellent and characteristic portrait of the celebrated song-writer, Captain Morris. It is enough to say that the allusions are to the licentious character of many of his effusions. Captain Morris, of the Life Guards, was distinguished by his social qualities, the vivacity of his conversation, the inexhaustible fund of merriment and anecdote which enlivened it ; and above all, by the facility with which he composed convivial songs, and the hilarity with which he sung them. These qualifications rendered him an universal favourite, and introduced him to the society and sumptuous** Hand Coloured. LORD CATHCART. OEOBGB III. SIR D. DUNDAS. A caricature on the undignified appearance of royalty in the person of George III. May 21st, 1798. SIR FRANCIS BURDETT. Burdett, who was at this time coming into notoriety as a patriot, is placed last in the list. A SCOTCH PONY, COMMONLY CALLED A GAL-

LOWAY. June Uh, 1803.

LORD GALLOWAY. Understood to be a portrait of Lord Galloway. His pride in the decoration which figures on his breast seema to have been almost proverbial.
