Antique Fish prints by Jonathan Couch from: "History of the Fishes of the British Islands" published in four volumes between 1862 and 1865. This great work contained 256 water colours and drawings .He made hundreds of drawings of the fish he dissected, keeping a jet of water over each specimen so that he could paint their fresh brilliance before the colours faded.Original antique  woodblock prints that are the result of the collaboration of three of the most talented men of the era:  Couch drew the fish from nature; Alex F. Lydon prepared the woodblocks; and Benjamin Fawcett printed the plates ( as in Morri's Birds and Houses etc) . The color woodblock prints were then finished with hand colouring by locals in Polperro ! Published in London,  Page size: 16.5 x 25 cm ( 6.5 x 9.8 ") Image sizes vary

Jonathan Couch (1789-1870), was a country doctor from Polperro, a small fishing village in Cornwall.  Couch, an authority on fishes, also did the sketches which were finished by Alexander Lydon, with the wood block engraving by Benjamin Fawcett.   Many of the engraved plates were finished by hand. Many have minor flaws if an exact condition report is needed ask
