George Woolliscroft
RHEAD, (1855-1920)
A talented
pottery painter, etcher,
illustrator and art teacher.
He was an apprentice at
Minton's acquiring the skills
of pottery painting under W.
S. Coleman . In 1871 Minton
Art Pottery Studio was set up
in Kensington Gore, London
under the directorship of
Coleman. George went to join
him there as pottery painter.
The studio was destroyed by
fire in 1875. In 1877 George
won a scholarship to the South
Kensington School of Art where
he was awarded a Certificate
in Art Teaching in 1880. He
spent time travelling Europe
before settling permanently in
London.
In 1898 he was
co-illustrator of Idylls of
the King with his brother
Louis. He also wrote several
books on subjects such as
etching, pottery, costume and
the history of the fan.
Perhaps he is best known as
the designer of Queen Mary's
coronation fan in 1911. Signed

SIR
FRANCIS SEYMOUR HADEN,
(1818-1910), English surgeon and
etcher,. He was admitted as a
member of the College of Surgeons
in London in 1842. Besides his
many-sided activities in the
scientific world, during a busy
and distinguished career as a
surgeon, he followed the art of
original etching with such vigour
that he became not only the
foremost British exponent of that
art but was the principal cause
of its revival in England. By his
strenuous efforts and
perseverance, aided by the
secretarial ability of Sir W. R.
Drake, he founded the Royal
Society of Painter-Etchers and
Engravers.. £65

Etchings are prints
which are made by scratching a design in a film of
resin that covers a metal plate, usually copper.
The plate is then placed in an acid bath which eats
away at the exposed copper, creating grooves to
hold ink. In the nineteenth century, the technique
appealed to painters because they could draw freely
and quickly in the resin film with a needle and
were able to produce prints without the assistance
of a professional printer. These are in roughly
price order All prices are post and packaging
inclusive
