He first gained notice in 1803 with his aquatints after Thomas Girtin's designs which were published under the title of, Twenty of the most Picturesque Views in Paris and its Environs. Afterwards, from 1808 to 1823, he became one of the principal engravers for William Ottley's famous volumes on Renaissance art, The Italian School of Design. Lewis also contributed etchings for J.M.W. Turner's, Liber Studiorum , as well as creating commissioned engravings after the designs of Landseer and Flaxman. During his successful career, F. C. Lewis exhibited his art at the Royal Academy (1802-1853), the British Institution (1817-1853), the Society of British Artists (1824-1846) and at the Old Water-Colour Society.
