drawings by Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708–1770) a botanist and
entomologist, known for his botanical illustrations. Widely
regarded
as the best botanical artist of his day. Born in Heidelberg, Germany,
Ehert spent the majority of his career working in England. Many of the
pieces were painted during his time under patronage to 3rd Earl
of
Bute and the Duchess of Portland. He contributed to some of the most
important botanical publications of the eighteenth century though only
a few are signed. A vast
number of species are displayed -- over 4,000 plants and flowers
depicted on 1,025 plates.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was an influential pharmacist and botanist,
director of the longest established pharmacy in Regensburg . He
employed Ehret, who was then in his twenties, to make the drawings in
Regensburg, many of which were engraved with a recently- developed
printing process combining etching and mezzotint, allowing fine detail
and subtle shading, which was enhanced by the hand-colouring.It
features etching and mezzotint by Haid and Seuter. The Iconographia
were the first botanical engravings to be printed in colour with
finishing by hand some enhanced with gum arabic
