Sir Muirhead Bone (23 March 1876 - 21 October 1953) A Scottish etcher, drypoint and watercolour artist. The son of a printer, Bone was born in Glasgow and trained initially as an architect, later going on to study art at Glasgow School of Art. He began printmaking in 1898, and although his first known print was a lithograph, he is better known for his etchings and drypoints. His subject matter was principally related to landscapes, architecture (which often focussed on urban construction and demolition sites) and industry.

In 1901 he moved to London, where he met William Strang, Dugald MacColl and Alphonse Legros, and later became a member of the New English Art Club. Bone was also a member of the Glasgow Art Club with which he exhibited. After the outbreak of the First World War, Charles Masterman, head of the British War Propaganda Bureau and acting on the advice of William Rothenstein, appointed Bone as Britain's first official war artist in May 1916

Muirhead Bone (as Official War Artist)

War Drawings .  Portfolio of 60 ' War Drawings' of Aspects of the First World War. Published in    London Published By Authority of the War Office 1918Folio sized (c. 22" x 19" ) heavy card portfolio with ties, with a dark blue cloth spine and 'duck-egg' blue , black titled, paper boards - completely split in two and tatty, having been repaired with a black tape to the spine, at some point, but now consists basically of just the front and back covers, which are complete and of course have protected the contents, which are 60 super lithographic prints of various aspects/people and places of the First World War. The 60 prints are FINE - printed in a variety of tones, mainly duo toned - black with a coloured wash - but a few with added colour and one or two more fully coloured. They vary in image size, but most images are just a little smaller than the paper size which measured to the blank edges is c. 20" x 16". " Muirhead Bone (1876 -1953) A Glasgow born draughtsman and engraver, became the First Official War Artist in July 1916. The detail and accuracy of Bone's drawings made him a prime choice for the authorities at Wellington House. He was made an honorary second lieutenant and provided with a car, giving him easier access to the action at the front. Bone was sent to France on his first commission. The next year he worked on naval subjects, followed by a short period in France to record the devastation of the towns..." . This portfolio includes scenes from the Western Front as well as a few naval subjects. A Complete Set of 60 Lithographic prints. Quite Scarce. See Images. ; Folio 13" - 23" tall
