Muirhead
Bone 23 March 1876 . . 21 October 1953
Born Glasgow he studied at the GSA and
with Archibald Kay, moving to London in
1901, having also trained as an
architect. This interest in
architecture was soon revealed in his
powerful drawings in charcoal with wash
depicting Gothic cathedrals or Norman
doorways, executed before 1910. During
the First World War, Bone acted as an
official war artist, and his drawings
and watercolours of the Somme
Battlefield executed in 1916 are
amongst the most moving images of the
war. In 1917 he worked with the Grand
Fleet, and a selection of both series
were subsequently published as
TheWestern Front and With the Grand
Fleet. Between the wars Bone worked
extensively in Europe, visiting Spain,
France, Holland and Italy and producing
not only drawings but also etchings.
During the 1939-45 war he acted as an
official War Artist.
