Lithograph.;The
image is made usinga waxy crayon
on a block of limestone or a zinc plate, the surface of which
is wetted, and rolled with ink. The ink adheres to the wax ,
but not the dampened surface. As the image lies on the
surface and not in the grooves, little pressure is needed
during printing. Hence no plate marks.
Chromolithograph prints from the 19th Century. The process
was based on lithography (printing from stone slabs), but
extended so that a stone was used for each color and each
seperate color was laid on top of the previous one.... thus
the paper sheet was printed on several times before the print
was finished. Colours were built up in layers on the final
print, to achieve the effect. This required
both a number of
stones (adding to the expense) and a very precise method for
laying the stones.
The
original set, considered a classic on canaries, contained 56
chromolithographs and numerous wood engravings that are still
admired by canary aficionados today. It was divided into three
sections: canaries by Blakston, British cage-birds by Swaysland and
foreign cage-birds by Weiner (including the parrots). Blakston was
one of the great canary experts of his time. J.W. Ludlow was an
ornithological artist who apparently specialized in domestic birds.
He illustrated several books published by Cassell and others
between 1867 and 1886 on poultry and pigeons, including The
