Gravure by Lilian Marguerite Medland (1880-1955) She produced 318 monochrome plates to illustrate Charles Stonham's five volumes of The Birds of the British Islands  1906-11.Accurately coloured by hand in watercolour after publication / also mounted. Measures 9 1/2" x 12 1/2"./page 33 x 25.5 cm

Lilian Marguerite Medland 1880-1955
trained and worked for many years as a nurse in England. met Charles Stonham, a senior surgeon at Guy's Hospital where she did her training. He published The Birds of the British Isles between 1906 and 1911, with her as illustrator. She later married Tom Iredale and did the illustrations for a number of his books..She produced paintings to illustrate Gregory Mathews' books on Australian birds. She also illustrated the plates for her husband Tom Iredale's books Birds of Paradise and Bower Birds (1950) and Birds of New Guinea (1956).
Charles Stonham 1858-1916
Well respected and successful surgeon at Guys and Westminster Hospitals. who's career was in medicine, but his passion was ornithology.
