The Gwalior Plains

John Skinner Prout (1806-1876) was an architectural illustrator and painter. Born in Plymouth and nephew of Samuel Prout (Topographical illustrator, drawing master and watercolourist). John specialised in similar subjects to his uncle but was practically self-taught. He was elected a member of the New Watercolour Society (NWS) on his return from Australia in 1849, where he visited Sydney and Hobart. He had already forfeited his membership of the NWS in 1838 by being overseas. John settled in Bristol after 1849 where he became a good friend of W. J. Muller (artist). He later moved to London where he died, at Camden Town on 29th August 1876.

The Fortunate Escape of Capt.n Cook, from the Furious Natives of Erramango.
c1790 Engraving. 210 x 280mm. Erromango, "the land of Mangoes", one of the largest and least populated islands in Vanuatu, visited by Cook 4th August 1774. The third voyage of Captain James Cook (1728-1779) was organized to discover the Northwest Passage and explored the waters of the Pacific Ocean north of the Equator. The official artist of Cook's Third Voyage was John Webber (1752-1793) who diligently recorded the sights of the journey as they were experienced. Original engravings done after Webber's drawings and paintings document the people and places of the Pacific voyage. These engravings were published in 1784-85 in the large four volume atlas Voyage to the Pacific Ocean...for Making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere...to Determine the Position and Extent of the West Side of North America.... The atlas was published by G. Nichol and Thomas Cadell in London.. Mounted perfect £55 inc
