"Histoire Naturelle, Generale et Particuliere Avec la Description du
Cabinet du Roi" 1763. Designed by De Seve, Jacques E. (French, fl. 1742
- 1788) and engraved by Le Grand, Louis. Jacques E. De Seve was the
principal artist commissioned by Comte de Buffon to illustrate his
'Histoire Naturelle..." He was not content to simply portray his
animals in a dry and factual manner. Rather, he insisted on providing
full backgrounds, including classical landscapes as on many here.

These designs are
well engraved. Buffon, began his career as both a
mathematician and as a philosopher and turned to the study of the
natural world in his early forties. Appointed by the King as
Superintendent of the Royal Gardens in Paris, Buffon based his
researches upon their extensive collections. The first volume of his
monumental, Histoire Naturelle, appeared in 1749 and was so successful
that the last volume was still to be published after his death. Later
editions put more specimens to the page the later English edition was
1812
Buffon was one of the most influential of the 18th century Natural
history writers. |
