Stainborough in the County of
York . . Wentworth House
This house, formerly called as on the print
Stainborough House, now known as Wentworth
Castle, to distinguish it from its huge
neighbour, Wentworth Woodhouse. The House and
the fine Park around it is due to undergo a
substantial conservation programme.The rather
Baroque design is attributed to Jean de Bodt,
whom the owner, Thomas Wentworth (first Lord
Raby, then Earl of Strafford) met in Berlin.
This print is exactly contemporary with the
build of the House. The wonderful waterfall with
dolphins in front should be noted, though
whether this was built we do not know &endash;
it is not mentioned in Pevsner......"
